PM ROADM F40-H4 / PM ROADM F80-H4

40 and 80 channel ROADMs, 4 degree ROADMs

PM ROADM F40-H4 / PM ROADM F80-H4

Pluggable 4-degree WSS-based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer module. Supports either 40 or 80 channels.

The EKINOPS PM ROADMs are low cost, highly scalable, extremely flexible 2 to 8 degree ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers) modules. These modules allow optical networks to be built without the usually necessary rigorous planning required to determine at what sites wavelengths are to be dropped.

ROADMs allow for the dropping of any wavelengths in the optical spectrum at sites where they are installed. There are no limitations on the number of wavelengths or which wavelengths can be dropped as would be the case with traditional optical add drop multiplexers. In addition, these modules allow for the dynamic, software programmable, routing of wavelengths throughout complex optical networks. When these modules are utilized at optical route junctions, wavelengths can be routed from one optical route to another without the need to terminate and regenerate with transponders as would normally be the case.

Unlike most ROADMs, the PM ROADMs offered by EKINOPS utilize a cost-effective technology that dramatically lowers the cost of initially deploying ROADMs in your network but still allows you to scale to the same extent as more expensive ROADM solutions on the market. EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 and ROADM F80-H4 can be inexpensively utilized to build a 2 degree ROADM and allow for incremental growth of up to 8 degrees. Adding an EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 or ROADM F80-H4 to such a ROADM node allows for building a directionless ROADM node. The EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 is a 40 channel ROADM and the ROADM F80-H4 is an 80 channel ROADM.

Furthermore in combination with the EKINOPS RM OC16 optical coupler and coherent optical interfaces colorless ROADMs can be designed.

Applications

The most common applications for ROADMs are for fully flexible add-drop capability and for rerouting of wavelengths at critical optical network junctions. ROADMs used at add drop-sites allow the flexibility to drop any wavelength through software commands with no wavelength restrictions:

Degree 2 ROADM
Figure 1: Degree 2 ROADM

In the above example, utilizing the EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 at the ROADM site allows for the unrestricted adding or dropping of up to 40 wavelengths and utilizing the EKINOPS ROADM F80-H4 allows for the unrestricted adding or dropping of up to 80 wavelengths. Dropping of wavelengths at the ROADM site is controlled via software commands issued locally or remotely. ROADMs used in complex networks allow for the automatic reroute of wavelengths from one optical span to another through the use of simple software commands.

The ROADM site in this example can reroute wavelengths coming from any of the 4 connected nodes to any of the other 4 connected nodes. Because the ROADM lies at the intersection of the 2 optical spans, it has access to all wavelengths in this network. Any wavelength in the network can be dropped at the ROADM site.

The EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 or ROADM F80-H4 can be utilized to provide this 4 degree node, but can also be used to create 8 degree node by addition of coupler and additional ROADM-H4 units.

Locally, the ROADM is offering a directionless add and drop functionality which can be implemented in a very cost effective way by adding an EKINOPS ROADM F40-H4 or ROADM F80-H4 to the node.

A colorless ROADM can be obtained straightforwardly with the afore mentioned directionless ROADM architecture by using coherent interfaces in combination with an optical splitter.

The wavelength capacity of this local add drop functionality depends upon the splitting ratio of the used optical coupler.

For instance when using the EKINOPS RM OC16, a coupler with a splitting ratio of 16, the ROADM allows to add drop locally up to 16 channels — in any direction. Hence the remotely-controlled colors of the added dropped wavelengths evolve seamlessly with your optical network architecture design and capacity.

Altogether a cost-effective directionless and colorless ROADM is obtained.

Management

The EKINOPS PM ROADMs module can be managed through SNMP or via the EKINOPS standard element level management interfaces, which include a Command Line Interface (CLI) and an EKINOPS java-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The CLI is accessible via Secure Socket Shell (SSH) and Telnet remotely or via a local serial port locally on the management board.

The PM ROADM modules can be managed remotely either utilizing a Data Communication Network (DCN) connection directly to the management card of the shelf in which the ROADM modules are installed or through the optical network using the embedded 10 Mbps in-band Data Communications Channel (DCC) of another modulein the shelf.

The EKINOPS PM ROADMs module is also supported by Celestis NMS, the EKINOPS advanced Network Management System.
