Aggregation and transport of two GbE/GFC Protocols over SONET/SDH and CPE for OC-48 transport

Pluggable 2.5G aggregation and transport module with three SFP client ports. Single pluggable 2.5G SFP line side port. Used for aggregation of two 1GbE/1GFC or a single OC-48/STM-16 to a 2.5 Gbps OC-48/STM-16 line.

The EKINOPS PM 253 is part of the EKINOPS 360 platform and is an ideal solution for service providers that offer Gigabit Ethernet and OC-48 services. It occupies one slot in the EKINOPS Chassis and operates in two modes. In the first mode it aggregates and transports cost-effectively two GbE or GFC inputs over an OC-48/STM-16 line. In the second mode it is used as a CPE to transport OC-48 or STM-16 and has an OC-48/STM-16 interface on the client and line side. The EKINOPS PM 253 offers optional 1+1 protection in both modes and accepts standard SFP optics. Using appropriate SFPs, the EKINOPS PM 253 supports CWDM & DWDM and long haul transmission. The OC-48/STM-16 line interface is fully compatible with SONET/SDH equipment and STS-48c/AU4-16c and STS-24c/AU4-8c framing.

With a programmable architecture, the capabilities of the EKINOPS PM 253 can be easily extended to support new standards and features through in-service upgrades.


The EKINOPS PM 253 module can be managed through SNMP or via the EKINOPS standard element level management interfaces, which include a Command Line Interface (CLI) and an EKINOPS java-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The CLI is accessible via Secure Socket Shell (SSH) and Telnet remotely or via a local serial port locally on the management board.

Complete performance monitoring and management are provided, including laser shut off and local and remote loopback, useful for maintenance and fault isolation.

Digital Diagnostics Management (DDM) is supported for SFP interfaces. This includes link status, transmit (TX) and receive (RX) signal power monitoring, and operational temperature, as well as manufacturer and transceiver model information essential for inventory management. A 10 Mbps in-band Data Communications Channel (DCC) is embedded in the line side for remote management (available only in the first mode with Gigabit clients).The EKINOPS PM 253 includes SONET/SDH Performance Monitoring on the line side and offers RMON on the GbE ports as an option.

The EKINOPS PM 253 module is also supported by Celestis NMS, the EKINOPS advanced Network Management System.

The EKINOPS PM 253 can be used to aggregate traffic from two Gigabit Ethernet switches (or FibreChannel) and transport them over a SONET/SDH network or an OC-48/STM-16 leased line. Service providers can use the EKINOPS PM 253 at the edge of their network to cost-effectively provide GbE services over their SONET/SDH network. The TDM aggregation ensures separation between the two Gigabit inputs so access from one to the other is not possible. Another application for the EKINOPS PM 253 is in CWDM & DWDM networks where it transports two GbE channels over only one wavelength.

The EKINOPS PM 253 also provides an efficient and cost-effective backhaul solution for DSLAMs or mobile networks.
