A Remote Optical Power Amplifier (ROPA) system is an amplification system that allows for all active components in the system (i.e. all lasers/pumps) to be located at the terminal site of a WDM span, even when inline amplification is necessary. Utilizing the EKINOPS RM RAP in conjunction with the rest of the EKINOPS amplifier family allows for DWDM links of up to 450 km with no inlineactive components.
The ROPA system consists of two components, the EKINOPS RM RAP (Remote Amplifier Pump) and a “remote passive device”, the EKINOPS CM ROA (Remote Optical Amplifier), which is spliced into the fiber within 80 km of the location of the EKINOPS RM RAP. The EKINOPS RM RAP remotelypumps the CM ROA, amplifying the WDM channels that pass through it. The EKINOPS RM RAP hasthree pump laser diodes and features multiple independent laser safety features based on Automatic Power Reduction (APR). The EKINOPS RM RAP contains redundant, replaceable powersupplies and fan units.
The EKINOPS CM ROA is purely passive, thus eliminating the need for local power, environmental control, and maintenance as would be required if a conventional amplifier was used instead.The EKINOPS CM ROA can be housed in an independent splice box or can be installed in anexisting splice box on the route.
The EKINOPS RM RAP module can be managed through SNMP or via the EKINOPS standard element level management interfaces, which include a Command Line Interface (CLI) and an EKINOPS java-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The CLI is accessible via Secure Socket Shell (SSH) and Telnet remotely or via a local serial port locally on themanagement board.
Complete performance monitoring and management is provided, including internal power supply status, fan status, pump status, pump temperature, pump power, pump current, back reflection power, input power and internal module temperature, which is useful for maintenance and fault isolation. The EKINOPS RM RAP also provides atest port that allows for the monitoring of the composite signal exitingthe device (1% tap).
The EKINOPS RM RAP module is also supported by Celestis NMS, the EKINOPS advanced Network Management System.

The ROPA system is ideal for any application that requires traversing large distances withoutthe use of inline amplifiers. Traditional applications that fall into this category include distanceextension, “hut” skipping (skipping environmental huts, or enclosures, on WDM routes) and submarine.
In the above diagram, because there are no active components on the WDM span, there is noneed for environmental enclosure (ex. : hut) along its entire length allowing for a single hopdistance of up to 450 km. This is ideal for deploying in locations where real estate is expensive or does not exist. In general, long distances with no inline enclosures saves operational cost sassociated with maintaining the enclosures. The ability to go very long distances without active components is also ideal for submarine applications.
Finally, the ROPA configuration can be utilized simply to achieve longer distances (i.e. distance extension) or to achieve longer distances between amplifier sites for WDM spans up to 450 km. This allows the service provider to extend its service reach and address more business customers.
