Modern VideoFilm, headquartered in Burbank, California, has deployed EKINOPS equipment to build an optical network for transporting uncompressed high-definition (HD) video. The network is used to transport video and data during the post-production process for movies and TV shows.
Modern VideoFilm, one of the premiere post-production companies in the entertainment industry, sits in the core of the movie and TV production business and provides services to all the major Hollywood studios. The company has several locations in the Los Angeles area that are networked together so teams can access data between sites.
“Since the emergence of high-definition technology, the need to transport HD video between our different facilities has increased rapidly.” explained Kim Roberts, Director of Corporate Services at Modern VideoFilm. “There really isn’t a comprehensive HD infrastructure that will fit our needs in place yet, so we decided to lease dark fiber between our sites and purchase the EKINOPS equipment to light it up.”
Modern VideoFilm is using the EKINOPS equipment to transport 10GbE data along with the SDI and HD-SDI video over fiber. Although transporting SDI and HD-SDI can be achieved by compressing these signals, the quality of compressed video is much lower and not suited for the studios. Increasingly, content providers and production companies are looking for transport of uncompressed digital video signals, which eliminates the need for compression and avoids degrading of the original quality.
